Kalahari Resorts and Conventions in Round Rock held a grand opening Wednesday morning featuring its new outdoor waterpark expansion, just in time for summer.

The multi-million-dollar expansion to the African-themed waterpark added several new attractions, including a 900-foot-long lazy river, an adults-only swim up bar, and a water-play area featuring nine bug-themed slides for kids.

Kalahari Resorts says it’s home to America’s largest indoor waterpark in the country, and now it’s getting even bigger. It had been planning the expansion for the past few years.

“The outdoor park now kind of expands to roughly about five acres,” said Kalahari Resorts and Conventions Waterpark director Brian Szydloski. “It’s got a lot of water! Currently, between both phases of the outdoor water park, you’re looking upwards of over a million gallons of water outside.”

Guests attending the grand opening raved about the new attractions and many said they intend to come back.

“It’s very kid-friendly,” Liliana Prado said. “Especially since I have a younger son and a little baby.”

Jane Ko, who runs an Instagram account covering things to do in Austin, said the park is also tailored to adults.

“I like the lazy river!” said Kalahari Resorts content creator Jane Ko. “I just kinda want to float there for a couple of hours and just like soak up the sun, and then go to the bar and get a drink. I can also see my friends coming here to hang out. I’m excited for the swim-up bar that’s adults only.”

The resort wants you to feel free to make a splash but says they want guests to do so safely in this dangerous heat. To ensure that’s happening, the resort is equipped with its own EMS and lifeguards on-hand, along with other outdoor amenities to cater to guests’ needs in the heat.

“Kalahari is doing a great job,” said guest Liliana Prado. “They have food, drinks, plenty of water, Gatorade, so we’re thankful for that.”

Szydloski says safety is their number one priority.

“We really encourage everybody to stay hydrated,” he said. “Enjoy outside, but also remember to head inside to have some fun there, as well.”

The waterpark is open to guests staying at the resort, but they also offer day passes here for anyone who would like to escape the summer heat.
