Wemby mania sweeps South Texas as fans eagerly await his arrival in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO - Just a few more days until Wemby Mania invades South Texas.
The excitement is awesome, and as good as Victor Wembanyama is already, he is nowhere near a finished product. He has to learn the NBA game and style, and he has to develop his body and his game.
Sean Elliott says everyone needs to give Wemby, and the Spurs, a little bit of time.
He still has a lot of growing to do," Elliott said. "He's got to get physically stronger. He's only 19 years old. So he's going to get stronger and he might grow a little bit more, who knows. You don't want to put that type of pressure on a young man so early on in his career. Let him come in. Let him adjust and don't put a lot of pressure on him. Don't put any kind of expectation on him so early. I think that would be detrimental to not only him but the fans. Just let him develop and grow as a player and let's see what happens.
I don't think fans in New York are taking Sean's advice though, as he arrived in the Big Apple for the NBA Draft to huge fan fare.
Wemby is a class act, so he took time for autographs, but was a little surprised to see fans at the airport.
Our Don Harris will be among the first to talk to him on Wednesday in Brooklyn then after the draft, Wemby will arrived in San Antonio around 2 p.m. on Friday.
His introductory press conference is set for Saturday.
And we've been told he will likely only played a limited amount of games in the Las Vegas Summer League.
